“Education secretary should use Detroit visit to reinforce need to reform failing urban schools


“U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, slated to visit Detroit on Wednesday, should use the visit to advance a reform agenda for one of America’s most troubled school districts.


“There is no better place to make his mark than Detroit. He has committed himself to urban school reform. But he faces the usual entrenched forces that are vested in maintaining the status quo, including administrators who resist change and accountability and teachers unions, one of the Democrats’ most powerful voter bases.”
